Frankenstein – Book Jacket Redesign
Project Overview
As part of a design course project, I reimagined the book jacket for Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The assignment encouraged students to take a well-known literary classic and create a fresh visual interpretation that captured the book’s themes while appealing to a modern audience.
Design Challenge
The original text is dark, layered, and emotionally charged, themes of humanity, creation, and isolation needed to be expressed in a way that would resonate with contemporary readers. The design also had to function practically as a book jacket, balancing imagery with legible typography for the spine and back cover.
Design Solution
I developed a design that highlights the tension between science and humanity, using stark contrasts in color and texture to convey the novel’s gothic tone. A limited color palette emphasizes mood and atmosphere, while bold typography anchors the design in a modern aesthetic. The composition is both dramatic and restrained, reflecting the duality of Frankenstein’s story, creation and destruction, brilliance and tragedy.
Tools Used
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
Outcome
The final book jacket presented a striking reinterpretation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. By blending gothic undertones with modern design principles, the piece demonstrates both conceptual thinking and practical execution in print design.
